What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a month for me to celebrate being Black and show my pride. It is also a month where we can highlight the works and incredible things that Black people have done for this country. It is a month where we recognize incredible people who have done a lot for justice for Black people in this country. It is a month for Black people to celebrate themselves.

How do you envision a just and equitable future?

I envision a just and equitable future when white people and non-Black people stop undermining Black people problems and listen to what we have to say when they stop putting words into our mouth and doing things that don't benefit us and only benefits them, also when they stop doing performative activism and actually help Black people fight for justice. The 2020 uprising really showed the true colors of non-Black activists in this country and what they really think Black Lives Matter means and how they portray it.

How did you celebrate your joy this past year?

I celebrated doing a Black historical figure of the day every day for my AVID class and wearing my “I am proud that I’m Black shirt” once a week.

Does Black History Month mean anything different to you after 2020's civil rights uprising?

Black History Month means something different now for me after the 2020’s civil rights uprising because we have a whole month to celebrate all we have done for the past year and celebrate the people who have stood up for the injustices that were/are still going on.

How do you celebrate Black history, culture, and art year-round?

I celebrate Black history, culture and art year-round by purchasing from Black-owned businesses and highlighting Black historical figures in my club presentations. As a Black person, every day I celebrate Black excellence whether it’s just listening to music or making food.
