  11. 3355: Monday Morning Raku Firing

    July 23, 2018, 9:30 AM - 11:30 PM @ Edina Art Center

    Join this class to make, glaze and fire Raku pottery. Raku is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony. Bisque pots are glazed, dried and fired in the kiln where they remain until the glazes have melted at temperatures around 1,800 degrees. The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction chamber” full of combustible material that burns and alters the glaze, color and surface. The Raku process is fun and hands-on and produces wonderful, lustrous and crackle glazes. All students will glaze-fire three times in this 8 week class. *No class July 2.

    Learn several ways to add color to copper clay, from colored pencil to patina inks. Students will design pieces in copper clay and, after firing, enhance the design with various coloring techniques. Copper clay basics will be covered in this class; no previous copper clay experience is needed. Copper clay is an inexpensive and easy way to create pure copper jewelry without saws or power tools. All supplies will be provided. Students are welcome to purchase additional metal clay packets from the instructor. The supply fee of $50 includes 50 grams of Art Clay Copper and metal clay tool kit. Students who have a metal clay kit will receive 2-50g packets of Art Clay Copper.

    Draw from the model and learn the methods of the masters. The first half of class will consist of short poses to seize the figure quickly and to capture the rhythmic action of the pose. The second half of the class will be a sustained pose carried on in the remaining classes. This gives students the opportunity to learn how to finish a drawing incorporating form, anatomy, beauty of line and “sculpting” the body from within. Teens are welcome to take the class with adult permission.

    This class is a beginning metal sculpture class. Students will learn how to create any style of sculpture by forging, hammering or assembling pieces of metal. Students will learn to weld metals using both gas and wire feed type of welders. Bring in your found art from your basement and learn to assemble pieces into a memorable sculpture for your garden or home. Judd Nelson specializes in creating life size birds from the Midwest and will demonstrate how to create them. Modern or contemporary sculptures are also encouraged and artist Craig Snyder who specializes in this style will demonstrate techniques to create contemporary work.     Join this class to make, glaze and fire Raku pottery. Raku is a firing process developed in 16th century Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony. Bisque pots are glazed, dried and fired in the kiln where they remain until the glazes have melted at temperatures around 1,800 degrees. The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction chamber” full of combustible material that burns and alters the glaze, color and surface. The Raku process is fun and hands-on and produces wonderful, lustrous and crackle glazes. All students will glaze-fire three times in this 8 week class. *No class July 2.

    The Minneapolis Police Band consists of a concert band, a marching band and a swing band. The bands participate in 30 to 35 engagements a year. The marching band has been the official escort band for the Minneapolis Aquatennial Parade since the parade began in 1940.     We are a group of professional and amateur flutists coming from a variety of backgrounds who all share a love for our instrument and a desire to grow and learn together.     New this summer: Fitness In the Parks is a series of free classes in Edina parks to promote healthy living and taught by local businesses. No registration is required. Classes are open to adults of all fitness levels, and no experience is necessary. Just show up and join in the fun and fitness! We recommend you dress in workout clothes, bring water and a yoga mat or beach towel. This second class will be a fitness class provided by Orange Theory Fitness. It was postponed from an earlier date. In case of rain, call the weather hotline at 952-826-0368 to see if the class has been moved or rescheduled.
