Street Sweeping

Sweeping City streets ensures safe modes of transportation for all. This includes cleaning over 200 miles of roadway and bike lanes. Clean roadways improve air standards and storm water quality for the citizens of Edina.

The main sweeping takes place twice a year, once in the spring and also in the fall. It takes 4 to 5 weeks to get the entire City swept including parking lots and all hard surfaces. These operations are vital to our total City structure. Debris and garbage from winter needs to be swept before it gets into our storm water structures and wetlands. We concentrate on low-collector areas first and work out from there. Weather predicts when this operation is in full swing.

The fall sweep is intended to get the streets as clean as possible before snow removal takes place. Any sediment and leaves will inhibit storm water facilities if not cleaned. In Edina, leaves are not allowed to be placed in the street. We remove what falls and is blown on the hard surfaces before they can clog both grates and pipes, contributing to back-ups and/or flooding. With the help of residents who clean up yards and open areas in conjunction with the fall sweep, our community will be set for spring runoff and be a cleaner safer place to live.
