Protect Our Water
Water is our most precious resource; however, it is often taken for granted.
Although Minnesota appears to have a more than adequate supply of water, increasing demand from domestic, agricultural, and industrial water users can strain water resources and City water supply systems, especially during periods of drought.
Water conservation can reduce the demand placed upon ground and surface water sources and water supply systems. Conservation can save water users money by reducing water bills or water heating costs.
Use water wisely.
- Spend only 5 minutes in the shower to save up to 8 gallons each time.
- Turn off the water faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving to save up to 2.5 gallons per minute.
- Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes to save up to 50 gallons per week.
- Fix household leaks promptly to save up to 20 gallons per day.
- Clean sidewalks and driveways with a broom instead of a hose to save up to 150 gallons each time.
- Water your lawn less and mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and save hundreds or even thousands of gallons a year.

Water conservation also saves energy! Pumping water and wastewater is one of the largest energy uses in the City of Edina. Every gallon conserved reduces energy use.
In addition, here are five simple things you can do to protect Minnesota’s great lakes, streams and rivers:
- Clean up pet waste and put it in the trash.
- Compost yard waste.
- Reduce fertilizer use, and lawn irrigation.
- Keep your car well maintained and leak free.
- Keep lawn clippings off the road and sweeping paved surfaces clean.
You can also protect Minnesota’s natural water assets by:
- Planting a rain garden
- Installing a rain barrel
- Testing your soil before applying fertilizer
Government Corner
Under state law, a city with a population of more than 15,000 must annually notify its residents of the positions and salaries of its three highest-paid employees. As of Jan. 1, 2013, those positions in Edina are City Manager, $156,043; Police Chief, $129,958; and Director of Engineering, $129,958.
