Applications being accepted for appointment to boards, commissions
Edina, Minn., Dec. 15, 2013 – The Edina City Council is accepting applications for 2013 appointments to its advisory boards and commissions.
Advisory boards and commissions with vacancies include the Art Center Board, two openings; Community Health Committee, four; Construction Board of Appeals, four; Energy & Environment Commission, one; Heritage Preservation Board, four; Human Rights & Relations Commission, two; Park Board, one; Planning Commission, one; and Transportation Commission, one. Most volunteer positions are three-year terms, though there are a few partial terms to be filled.
“Boards and commissions are a great resource to staff and the City Council,” said Assistant City Manager Karen Kurt. “If you’re passionate about a topic, it’s a great way to influence the direction that the City might take in a particular area. It’s also a fun way to learn a little bit more about how local government works.”
Volunteers echo those comments. “For me, the best part of being on a board is working with other people of the same commitment. Anyone who is passionate about any of any aspect of city government should, at some point, probably get into one of those boards,” said Hafed Bouassida of the Art Center Board. “That’s the best way to be influential, as a citizen, in what is happening in your city.”
Most advisory boards include student representatives. Student appointments are one-year terms. Applications for student appointments will be accepted in the spring. Those terms will begin in the fall of 2013 after the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
To receive an application or for more information, visit the City’s website, www.EdinaMN.gov, or call City Clerk Debra Mangen, 952-826-0408. Applications must be received at Edina City Hall by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1.
All of the appointments must be approved by the Edina City Council. The City Council intends to interview all applicants. Interviews are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 7, Feb. 11 and Feb. 20. Appointments will be made in March.
