Bike Patrol
The Edina Police Department has had an active Bicycle Patrol program since 1996.
Patrolling on a bicycle has many advantages. Bicycles have access to areas that cars cannot go, such as parks, trails, narrow alleys and side yards. Bicycles can access emergencies within large buildings, such as a mall or school, more quickly than an officer on foot. Additionally, an officer on a bicycle is more approachable and more discrete than an officer in a squad car.
To be qualified for the Bike Patrol Team, an officer must attend an intensive 40-hour training program. Officers are taught advanced riding skills, defensive and offensive riding strategies and general bike maintenance. The fifteen officers currently assigned to the Bike Team come from all divisions of the department and utilize six specially equipped Trek patrol bikes.
For more information about the Bike Patrol Team, please contact Sgt. Tom Draper at 952-826-1601.
