Internet Safety

The internet is an integral part of our lives today, and the City of Edina Police Department wants to do all it can to help keep residents safe online. While there are numerous benefits to being present online, it is also important to be aware of the potential dangers, and how to ward against those for you and your family.

For Youth

The most important part to children’s safety online is to know what they’re up to when they log in. It can help to keep the computer in a high traffic area of the home, incorporate safety blocks, and asking your children on a regular basis about their online activity. Educate your children on an ongoing basis on digital literacy and social networking etiquette, cyberbullying, what private data means and why not to give it out, and what to do if someone online asks to meet in person. Building a dialogue with your family about internet safety can not only teach them about the seriousness of being safe online, but will also build a sense of trust if they are ever experiencing a problem.

For Adults

Keeping information private and secure is just as important for adults as for youth. Especially since many use the internet for online banking and shopping, it is crucial to keep private information, like credit card numbers and social security numbers, safe. Many hackers use false websites, popups and spam emails to acquire people’s information, so be careful not to click on unsafe links or give out information on unsecured sites. To help with this, have an updated firewall and anti-virus system downloaded on your computer to ward off spam. Be cautious about providing information online, and always make sure the site is a secure, reliable source.
