Learn how to move beyond the “auto mode” for better pictures under more challenging conditions. For point-and-shoot (non-DSLR) cameras, we’ll look at adjusting daylight and flash exposure by using “program,” “shutter preferred” and “aperture preferred” modes, setting camera sensitivity (ISO) and white balance, focusing on difficult subjects and using the self-timer. This class is for people moving up to a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, and all who want a better understanding of basic photographic principles to help them get better pictures. This course will cover the essential features of your DSLR camera including basic mechanics, care and use. We’ll explore the use of various shooting modes including “scene settings”, discuss ISO sensitivity, use of flash, zoom lenses and more. Bring your DSLR camera with a fully charged battery and its user’s manual. Participants will have maximum opportunities to ask questions regarding operation of their cameras.

This class will give you a broad overview of the functions and tools available to you. You will leave this class with knowledge of what can be done with this software and equipped to make decisions about pursuing more expertise in digital image manipulation. This class will not address the Organizer program.

The editing tools in Adobe Photoshop Elements allow you to easily and quickly restore photos damaged by fading, tearing and time. This class will focus on using healing and cloning tools, selection tools, the eraser tool and give an introduction to adjustment layers. Quick fix tools also let you enhance contrast and exposure as well as sharpening the photo. Prerequisite: A Survey of Adobe Photoshop Elements. The magic of Photoshop Elements flows from the selection tools that let you isolate portions of your images in order to apply special effects to those portions. The Marquee, Lasso, Magic Wand and Brush tools are used to add or subtract, move, copy, paste, delete, rotate or scale a selected area of the image. The selection tools can be adjusted in many ways to customize desired effects.

Advanced users of Photoshop Elements create layers so they can separate the elements in an image and then move and transform them independently of one another.  A layer can be superimposed on other layers so certain parts of the image can be colored, blurred, distorted, drawn upon, embossed or pixelated. Using layers is also the key skill involved in adding frames, shadows, watermarks as well as creating a collage of images. Prerequisite: Mastering the Selection Tools in Photoshop Elements.  2/4
