Having a good image is the beginning of a good painting. Our images should have good balance between lights and darks, warm and cool values or interesting composition and clear detail. We will copy a classical portrait of William Bouguereau. Photos will be supplied by the instructor for a $15 fee payable to the instructor. Our focus will be color mixing, color temperatures, values and the delicate balance of light and dark that is often seen in the master portraits. Six Portrait Sketches in Six Weeks

The use of three chalks allows the artist not only to explore light and shade but also the subtle hue shifts characteristic of living flesh. Emphasis will be on drawing throughout and character likeness, facial anatomy and structure and form modeling. We will be working from a live model. This method was popularized by Peter Paul Ruebens in the 17th century. We will be working from a live model using the sight-size and comparative methods. Instructor Lisa Webskowski works from her home studio as a portrait artist and free-lance illustrator. Lisa also worked as a police composite artist for eleven years. She will teach you how to draw the face in graphite pencil. You will learn anatomical proportion, shading and basic skills of portraiture. You will learn how muscle and bone structure work together to form a face. Lisa will share many interesting techniques that she has learned during her career.
