2016 City Council Candidates

Four candidates are vying for open seats in the race for Edina City Council. Incumbent Jim Hovland is unopposed in the election for Mayor. Mary Brindle, Donna Callender, Mike Fischer and Jennifer Janovy are campaigning for two open Council Member seats. The two “at large” Council Member seats are currently held by Brindle and Ann Swenson. Brindle seeks a third term.

The League of Women Voters of Edina will host a candidate forum at City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21. Those who attend will have an opportunity to hear opening remarks, ask questions of the candidates and hearing their closing remarks. The forum will be rebroadcast on Edina TV 10 p.m. Mondays, 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays, 7 p.m. Thursdays and 3 and 11 a.m. Fridays through Nov. 7.

The top vote-getters will begin their four-year terms in January. The municipal election will be held Nov. 8, in conjunction with the State General Election. Absentee voting begins Friday, Sept. 23 and goes through Nov.7.


Mayor and City Council
Edina is served by a mayor and four at-large City Council members who are each elected to serve four-year terms and have one equal vote when deciding an issue. City Council elections take place in even-numbered election years.

Eligibility to Hold Office
Article VII, Section 6 of the Constitution of the State of Minnesota: Every person who by the provisions of this article is entitled to vote at any election and is twenty-one (21) years of age is eligible for any office elective by the people in the district wherein he has resided thirty days previous to the election, except as otherwise provided in the Constitution and law of the United States.

Filing for Office
The following forms are required to be recorded with the City Clerk when filing for office and are available at Edina City Hall during business hours:

• Affidavit of Candidacy - 2016 Candidates Filing opens on Tuesday Aug. 2 and closes on Tuesday Aug. 16.
• Filing Fee of $5.00
• Campaign Financial Reports – please note that candidate campaign financial reports will be posted on the City’s website within 30 days of receipt and remain posted for four years.

  • Initial report is due within 14 days after receiving contributions or making disbursements of more than $750.
  • Subsequent reports are due 10 days before and 30 days after the election, and each year by Jan. 31 until a final report is filed.
  • Final report is due when all debts are settled and all assets are disposed of in excess of $100.
