Business Watch
The Business Watch philosophy is simple -- take control of what happens in your business community and lessen your chances of becoming a victim.
What is Business Watch?
Modeled after Neighbors' Home Watch, Business Watch takes the "neighbors looking out for neighbors" concept to the commercial level, creating a partnership between businesses, law enforcement and other organizations that reflect the same interest in maintaining a safe community. Business Watch groups actively reduce and prevent crime through educations and cooperation.
Why Join Business Watch?
Specifically, Business Watch is a partnership between the business community and the Edina Police Department. The program enables individual businesses and commercial property managers to take an active part in prevention and reducing crime on business premises. Through information sharing, raising awareness and improving communications, we can work together to foster a safe community.
When you start a Business Watch program on your street or block, or within your shopping center or mall, you take an important step towards a safe environment for yourself, your employees and your customers. In addition to reducing crime, some of the benefits of the Business Watch program include:
- On-site Security Surveys
- Network with other area businesses
- Foster a good working rapport with the Edina Police Department
- Garner publicity and community goodwill for your establishment
How does Business Watch Work?
Business Watch works through enhanced two-way communication among Watch members and the Edina Police Department. An email distribution list will be established and Crime Alerts will be sent to notify participants about business-related crime in Edina.
Alerts warn members about robberies, burglaries, theft from autos, current business scams and other topics of interest.
An initial meeting will be scheduled to review the program, the crime in your area, address any specific needs your group may have and give you the opportunity to meet other business owners and property managers in your immediate area.
Sustaining Momentum
After the first meeting, an area captain will be established. The captain is responsible for maintaining communication with Watch members and passing on any relevant information received from the Crime Prevention Specialist.
Maintaining an Active Status
In order to remain on the crime alert email distribution list, keep street signs hung and window decals displayed, businesses must maintain an active status by meeting once a year with fellow Business Watch members in the immediate area.
Would you like a special guest at your yearly meeting?
Police officers are available to speak at your annual meeting about financial fraud, shoplifting and additional issues pertinent to commercial security.
