Meet Edina's Hometown Heroes

Edina is made up of people who pride themselves with making the city a great place for living, learning, raising families and doing business.

Pat Wheelock

Canvases, brushes and oil paints are some of Pat Wheelock’s favorite things. For about 10 years, Pat has attended classes at the Edina Art Center to perfect her brush stroke.

Pat started painting portraits and recreating photos of her grandchildren on canvas. She has also done charcoal drawings of live models and portraits of dogs.

“I’m a really big dog lover,” Pat said. She doesn’t have any pets of her own, so she loves to take care of her “grand-dogs.” Pat said her son gave her a picture of his dog and, after seeing the beauty in the photo, she had to paint it.

Before taking classes, Pat had never picked up a paint brush. “I had always wanted to paint, ever since high school,” she said. After retirement, she decided to make her dream happen.

Pat spends about three hours each week at the Edina Art Center working with her oil paints. She said she finds pleasure in painting.

“I find it very relaxing,” she said. “Each week, I find myself really excited to go [to the Art Center]. “You get to know all these people who also paint and they become like family.”

Now, years after she picked up her first paint brush, Pat has completed dozens of portraits and other paintings.
