The Edina Art Center Pottery Studios is one of the premier pottery facilities in Minnesota. Currently under the direction of Pottery Studios Manager Sandra Shaughnessy, the studio began with an idea in the late 1970s of two individuals, Maureen Brockway and Jo French. Through their inspiration and leadership, the pottery department has grown to be a regionally recognized pottery facility.
The studios have 20 electric wheels with seven left-handed wheels, one adjustable wheel for students in wheelchairs and one kick-wheel. The Edina Art Center is known for the plentiful options is reduction firing with three gas cone 10, two electric cone 10, four electric cone 06 and two alternative firing kilns.
Outside in the covered kiln yard sit a new 30+ cubic foot gas kiln built by Master Kiln Builders with construction completed in 2011 and two new raku kilns completed in 2012. In addition, two slab rollers and a spray booth and unique glazes make the pottery studio one of the best in the state.
Fourteen instructors are on staff who excel in their craft and in their skill at teaching. Unique workshops from national and internationally known artists are held each year. Robin Hopper made his first visit to Minnesota with a three-day workshop in October 2011 with students attending from the five state area.
